about
The song is an instrumental, inspired by the various calamities befalling California (and the wider world) in these early years of the 21st Century - from pestilence to blood red smoke-filled skies. The overall mood of the song is melancholic - in my solos I tried to convey the feeling of grieving for the loss of the pre-pandemic lives we used to enjoy before last year; but still maintaining an intention to find beauty and meaning in what remains, even if it’s up to us to try and create it ourselves.
It's also a sequel/re-work of "Blue Sky Thinking", which was one of the tunes I wrote and recorded in 2016. This is much more of a complete vision than the original - not least because I enlisted the help of three excellent musicians to give it "proper" drums, bass and keys. I attempted to mix/produce it myself, so any deficiencies in the audio are 100% on me.
